Last August, Google  Chief Executive Officer Larry Page fulfilled a pledge made to one of his senior executives, a square-jawed former attorney named Dennis Woodside. Apple CEO Tim Cook had been trying to poach Woodside to make him Apple’s head of sales; Google had persuaded him to stay, in part by promising him a bigger job, according to two people with knowledge of the matter, but who asked not to be named because the discussions were private. Now it was time to make good.

Woodside says he was speaking with board member K. Ram Shriram when Page asked him to run Motorola Mobility, the company Google had just announced it was acquiring for $12.5 billion. “He said, ‘I know you’ve been looking for a challenge,’ ” Woodside recalls. “ ‘I want you to run Motorola. I think you’d be great at it. Can you let me know by tonight?’ ”

Google Inc. is close to launching a cloud-storage service that would rival one of Silicon Valley's hottest start-ups, cloud-storage provider Dropbox Inc., according to people familiar with the matter.
Like Dropbox, Google's storage service, called Drive, is a response to the growth of Internet-connected mobile devices like smartphones and tablets and the rise of "cloud computing," or storing files online so that they can be retrieved from multiple devices, these people said.

Google has announced plans to filter content based on requests from each country. We look at the 10 big facts of this story.

1) Google's content filtering measure by having country specific mirrors is limited only to its Blogging platform.

2) Google Search, Orkut and Google Plus remain unaffected by this measure.

3) The announcement comes on the heels of Twitter's announcement that it now has the technology to selectively block tweets by country.

4) The move comes weeks after the Delhi High Court had threatened Google and Facebook with China like bans if they refused to censor offensive content.

5) Google had tried to wash its hands off the situation saying it was just a search engine and could not be held responsible for content posted by others. With this move Google can claim to be doing what's under its control as this measure aims to address content hosted on Google's own blogging platform.

6) Google's silence on offensive websites featuring in its search results is likely to come under scrutiny in the coming days, as a large chunk of web traffic is driven by Google search.

7) Last month Google's Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora had expressed Google's inability to censor content based on requests from specific countries saying "You are asking not just censor the Web in India, you are asking to censor the entire world wide web. The web has no borders". With this move Google has, infact, facilitated censoring limited to certain geographies, thereby facilitating borders on the web.

8) With Google and Twitter announcing their measures for filtering content, the focus now shifts to Facebook and how it plans to address this area.

9) Minister of State for Information Technology Mr. Sachin Pilot had earlier downplayed Indian government's so called censorship, insisting the government just wanted people to have legal recourse in case they found some content objectionable and the government had no plans of censoring content by its own.

10) Google has already implemented this in India. People visiting blogname.blogspot.com from India will be automatically redirected to blogname.blogspot.in.

Blogger sites can now be blocked on a "per country" basis after a change to its web address system.

Google will now be able to block access in individual countries following a legal removal request.

The new system means blocking will not require restricting world-wide access to a blog.

The changes apply in Australia, New Zealand and India, but the BBC understands Google plans to roll it out globally.

Since Google Inc introduced its Android operating system in 2007, the company's strategy has been simple: Give it to developers for free and make money when consumers click ads on the Web or through apps. That model is hitting a snag.

Amazon.com Inc and Chinese internet giantsBaidu Inc and Tencent Holdings Ltd are using Android as a building block for their devices, skipping preloaded applications such as Gmail,Google Maps and YouTube that generate ad revenue for Google, as well as its app store. Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet, which is gaining ground on Apple Inc's iPad, comes with none of those apps.

I began using the internet to promote my talk shows way back in 1994, with my first email address and webpage. Today, I use it to promote business, build leads, sell books, get exposure on articles and to attract people to my internet marketing show and newsletter.
I began using social media, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube, marketing about 2 years ago and they still amaze me today. There will no doubt be a few major players who survive over the next 5-10 years in the enormous social media world. The question from an investment and business angle, is who to invest in and who will return to its shareholders the most over the next 5-10 years. I believe that Google , Facebook and LinkedIn may all win and win big; I will explain why and what I believe investors should be doing.
