Since Google Inc introduced its Android operating system in 2007, the company's strategy has been simple: Give it to developers for free and make money when consumers click ads on the Web or through apps. That model is hitting a snag.


Amazon.com Inc and Chinese internet giantsBaidu Inc and Tencent Holdings Ltd are using Android as a building block for their devices, skipping preloaded applications such as Gmail,Google Maps and YouTube that generate ad revenue for Google, as well as its app store. Amazon's Kindle Fire tablet, which is gaining ground on Apple Inc's iPad, comes with none of those apps.

Windows operating system, code named Mango, for mobile handsets has several familiar applications of a PC.

The smartphone market, which until now was majorly dominated by Google's Android and Apple's iOS, is making space for the new entrant — Microsoft's Windows operating system (OS). Code named Mango, this new OS for mobile handsets comes powered with many familiar applications of the most popular operating system in the PC world.

2012 promises to be the year of Windows Phone. Since its launch about a year back, the mobile OS from Redmond has seen meteoric rise in the form of acceptance and praises. Then with the new friendship formed between Nokia and Microsoft, the mobile platform has the sky as the limit. Nokia 
is expected to launch its first WP7 phones, Lumia, in another week or so, in India. The mobile OS has conveniently positioned itself as the third most popular platform, overtaking Blackberry. So, we decided to take Windows Phone 7.5 Mango (in Samsung Omnia W) and Android 2.3.2 Gingerbread (in Sony Ericsson Arc S) out for showdown against each other, to help you decide which mobile platform to invest on, this holiday season.

More than 10 billion apps have been downloaded from Google's Android Market.
To mark the moment Google said that for the next 10 days it would cut the price of some top apps to 10p each.
The search giant announced the milestone on its blog adding that the store's apps were being downloaded at a rate of one billion a month.
However, some industry analysts played down the figure saying Google should do more to address poor-quality programs.

Leading GDM operator Idea Cellular on Wednesday launched 3G Android smartphones to attract its existing 2G users to its 3G services.
“These smartphones will further drive our existing 3G services. Users will now be able to access the Internet through these devices. We are also studying if we should enter the 3G tablet market. But we have not taken any decision on it,” Idea Cellular MD Himanshu Kapania said.
